Welcome to Northern Utah’s Center for Learning to Play Guitar!

guitar 2 296x300 HomeThe Group Guitar Academy, located in Layton, Utah, is a great place to come for guitar lessons. We specialize in teaching through group classes rather than private lessons. Not only is this a much more exciting way to learn, but it also cuts down on the cost of learning. What could be better? Currently, we offer three different courses: Beginning Group Guitar, Intermediate Group Guitar, and Advanced Group Guitar. Check out the scheduling information on the right hand side of this screen to see when our next class will begin.

Each of our three courses is made up of eight lessons taught for one hour each week. At $15.00 per lesson, you will pay roughly half what you would be charged for private lessons. Plus, all books and handouts are included in your tuition and registration fee. Even better, discounts are available for pre-paying for lessons (see the registration form for more information).

Beginning Group Guitar covers the basics of everything. You don’t need to have any prior musical experience to join our beginning class, we’ll teach you everything you need to know. We teach you to read chord diagrams and strum along while we all sing and have a great time together. We also introduce the basics of tablature and spend some time picking out single-note melodies together. The final lesson for Beginning Group Guitar will help you simplify and transpose music you find online and in music stores so that you can play just about anything you want to play.

We do a quick review of tablature and strumming chords, then move right into finger-picking patterns for chords, alternating bass strumming, and even do a little blue-grass. We also spend more time learning music theory, learning the basics of reading standard music notation toward the end of the class. The intermediate course is all about finger-work, and is open to anyone who has completed Beginning Group Guitar.

Following Intermediate Group Guitar, you will be ready for Advanced Group Guitar. In this course we will teach you some more complex chords and work on combining chord strumming and tablature into the same song. We will also spend some time learning power chords and playing the blues. You may even find yourself writing some of your own songs!

Our focus in these classes is all about having a great time together, enjoying music. For one hour each week, you get to come, play, sing, and enjoy the company of others doing the same thing. Check out the pages for each of our classes to learn more about what we do. We’d love to have you come join us!
